The Former Fish Market, Plymouth
The former fish market in Plymouth has recently undergone a significant transformation, bringing new life to a historic waterfront site. Once a bustling hub for the city’s fishing industry, the Grade II Listed Building has been sub-divided into three modern commercial units while retaining elements of its maritime character.
The project forms part of ongoing efforts to revitalise the Barbican area, blending heritage with contemporary use.
We sought to carefully restored the exterior, preserving the market’s original façade and architectural details to maintain its link to Plymouth’s seafaring past. Inside, the layout has been reconfigured to provide flexible spaces suitable for retail, hospitality, or creative businesses. Large windows and open-plan interiors now allow light to flood in, creating a welcoming environment for both tenants and visitors.
The conversion has boosted local trade and attracted more footfall to the waterfront, complementing nearby independent shops, cafés, and attractions.
By repurposing the fish market instead of demolishing it, the scheme supports sustainable development and respects the area’s cultural significance. The three new commercial units are now occupied by a combination of retail and restaurants, reflecting the growing demand for distinctive, characterful premises in this vibrant part of the city.
