Void Studios at COP16, Cali, Colombia

Void Studios participated in COP16 in Cali, Colombia, engaging in workshops and forum discussions on the climate crisis, nature rights, financial mechanisms for Latin American initiatives, and the celebration of cultural and ecological diversity.

COP16 was a landmark gathering. Held in Cali, it was the first Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity hosted in Latin America, and it brought together governments, civil society organisations, scientists, and practitioners to advance the global biodiversity framework agreed in Kunming in 2022. For Void Studios, being present was not incidental. It was a deliberate commitment to understanding where architecture and regenerative practice sit within the decisions that are shaping the future of land, ecology, and culture at a global scale.

Our participation spanned workshops and forum discussions covering the financial mechanisms needed to support climate and biodiversity projects across Latin America, the emerging legal frameworks around the rights of nature, and the broader imperative of protecting cultural and ecological diversity as interdependent conditions. These are not abstract policy questions. They define the context in which every project we undertake operates.

What we take from forums like COP16 is clarity of position. Understanding how international frameworks are evolving, how nature is being valued, how communities are being recognised as rights holders, and how finance is beginning to follow ecological rather than purely economic logic, allows us to situate our practice within those shifts with precision and integrity.

This is, we believe, one of the things that distinguishes Void Studios. We do not wait for global decisions to filter down into building regulations and client briefs. We engage with those decisions at the source, so that the fullest possible picture informs the work we bring back to our studio and our clients of what responsible practice demands.
